Day 2 Recap: Luis and Lucille Scattini Memorial Basketball Tournament

The action heated up on Day 2 of the Luis and Lucille Scattini Memorial Basketball Tournament, with thrilling matchups and standout performances setting the stage for an exciting final day. Palma shined in a hard-fought semifinal victory to secure their spot in the championship game.

Game 1: Enterprise 60, Salinas 40

Enterprise set the tone early with a commanding 21-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Led by Wes Ramirez's 21 points and Ja'kye Thomas's 16, Enterprise maintained control throughout the game. Salinas' Nick Vega gave a strong performance, finishing with 16 points, but his efforts weren't enough to close the gap.

Game 2: Soquel 83, Seaside 38

Soquel dominated Seaside with a relentless combination of offensive firepower and stifling defense. After jumping out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter, Soquel widened the margin significantly in the second half, holding Seaside to just 17 points after halftime. D'Rel Hopkins and Steely Deans led Soquel with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Seaside's Timote Tulua contributed 14 points, while Justin Tharpe added 10 in the loss.

Game 3: Marina 66, Dougherty Valley 62

Marina delivered the upset of the day, knocking off defending tournament champions Dougherty Valley. Trailing by as many as 13 at halftime, Marina mounted a fourth-quarter comeback behind key stops and clutch free throws. Dylan Gomez drained four three-pointers to finish with 16 points, while Luke Pratalli scored 13, including seven in the final period. Barak Simon's perfect 6-for-6 free-throw shooting sealed the victory. Dougherty Valley's Rashad Cotton led all scorers with 21 points, and Tyler Robbins chipped in 15 in the loss.

Game 4: Palma 63, Independence 56

In the day's final game, the host Palma Chieftains held off a resilient Independence team to punch their ticket to the championship. Palma built a 16-8 lead in the first quarter and maintained their advantage despite several Independence surges, including moments when the visitors briefly grabbed the lead.

Senior guard Tai Suich led the way for Palma with 23 points, delivering key baskets down the stretch to keep Independence at bay. JJ Saucedo and Soren Roberts each added 11 points to contribute to the balanced attack. Independence was led by Mason Chi, who hit five three-pointers en route to a 17-point performance, and Josh Villanueva, who finished with 11.

Saturday's Final Round Matchups

The tournament concludes Saturday with an exciting slate of games:

  • Salinas vs. Seaside (12:00 PM)
  • Soquel vs. Enterprise (1:30 PM) – Consolation Championship
  • Dougherty Valley vs. Independence (3:15 PM) – Third-Place Game
  • Palma vs. Marina (4:45 PM) – Championship Game
